VANCOUVER- Toronto FC recorded their first win of the season today defeating 10-men Vancouver 2-0 seeing Victor Vazquez score his first goal for the Reds’.
Four changes to the TFC side from last weeks tie in Philly saw Bono, Osorio, Ricketts and Beitashour replace Irwin, Endoh, Vazquez and Giovinco.
The game started off slow, TFC dominated the opening exchanges between the two teams but failed to open the scoring. Nick Hagglund had a good header that was close but didn’t trouble the goalie.
A first half with almost no chances, the most action was the controversy about two penalty calls, one from each team but none were given.
The second half started well for TFC, Ricketts had his shot deflected just wide of the top corner and the Reds’ had a flurry of corners but couldn’t get ahead.
Armando Cooper came off for Vazquez to give TFC a different outlet in the midfield.
Justin Morrow had his shot denied by the debutant goalie Richey. The Reds’ were getting closer.
Brek Shea was shown two yellow cards within 10 seconds for swearing at the referee just seconds after getting his first yellow card. The Whitecaps’ were down to 10 men.
Raheem Edwards came on for Hagglund and made an instant impact, his cross found Jozy Altidore who headed the ball back across the net and the substitute Victor Vazquez headed home the opening goal of the game.
Minutes after going ahead, the Reds’ doubled their lead when Osorio played the ball to Altidore who used his strength to get into the box and beautifully finished off the game making it 2-0.
Vancouver applied some pressure in the late stages of the game but were unable to get back into it.
The final whistle went and the game finished 2-0 for Toronto FC, who remain unbeaten after three away games. Vancouver yet to win a game this season after having a player sent off in two consecutive games.
