CARSON, CA- Toronto FC extended their lead to eleven points at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings last night with a 4-0 win away against the LA Galaxy. No Altidore and Giovinco, no problem.
Three changes for TFC saw Hasler replace Beitashour, while Osorio was rewarded a start and Ricketts made his first start since May. Allesandrini and Jones were suspended so Bradford Jamieson and Jonathan Dos Santos started.
TFC started the game off well with some early chances from Ricketts, Vazquez and Morrow, but were unable to break the deadlock early on.
Toronto opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Drew Moor headed home a rebound from Vazquez’s free kick which rattled off the bar. Controversy was surrounding the goal because Vazquez took the free kick early, but never asked the referee for yards.
Only ten minutes later the Reds made it 2-0 when Hasler’s pass found Ricketts who slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.
TFC led 2-0 at the break.
LA had a chance early in the second half when Giovani’s shot went just wide of the bottom corner.
TFC thought they had made it 3-0 in the 60th minute but Ricketts was correctly ruled offside.
15 minutes later Ricketts finally got his second goal, this time onside, after Vazquez played the Canadian striker through on goal and his shot found the bottom left corner.
As if the game couldn’t get any worse for the Galaxy, just a minute after TFC made it 3-0, Alex Bono’s dropkick went all the way past the LA defence and found Vazquez who’s shot went off the post and in. 4-0 for the Reds.
Toronto went on to win 4-0 to claim their second ever win in LA, also their sixth win in a row and they extend their unbeaten streak to eleven.
LA now sit tenth in the Western Conference, eleven points out of a playoff spot and will travel to Atlanta on Wednesday. TFC will host rivals Montreal on Wednesday night and if results go their way, they could secure the Supporters’ Shield this week.
