TORONTO, Ont- Toronto FC defeated the Montreal Impact last night at BMO Field 1-0 in their final home game before the post-season in a game where the Supporters’ Shield trophy was presented.
Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore returned to the starting lineup for TFC, while the Impact were without star player Ignacio Piatti.
Mark Delgado hit the crossbar early on for TFC who started off well.
Romero’s shot went just wide for Montreal moments later, the game was stretched early.
Jozy Altidore gave TFC a 1-0 lead with his first goal in six games. The ball deflected into his path and the American tucked the ball into the bottom left corner.
Minutes later Montreal came close to equalizing when Mancosu’s shot was straight at Bono, who made himself big coming out for the one on one.
On the stroke of halftime Giovinco won a penalty after being brought down, but went on to miss it by hitting the post. Fortunately, the referee spotted the Impact keeper off his line and Giovinco had a second bite at the apple. The Atomic Ant hit the post once again and the score remained 1-0.
The second half wasn’t full of too much action. Giovinco missed a clear chance in front of goal and Bono made a brilliant double save off the line.
TFC went on to win 1-0, drawing level with the LA Galaxy for the record points in a season. The Reds will need at least a point next weekend in Atlanta to beat the record.
